London’s Hyde Park is going to busy in September. As well as the annual Proms in the Park, it will be the venue for a vigil with the new Pope on his first visit to Britain. Both events are likely to be very popular. There are also other events happening there too.
Guided Walk of Art and Architecture - Friday 10 September
A guided walk of the historic buildings in Hyde Park will take place on at 1 pm on Friday 10 September and will last about an hour and a half. Visitors are advised to wear clothes suitable for all weathers. There are also plenty of venues for refreshments and opportunities to take photographs.

Proms in the Park - Saturday 11 September
The annual Proms in the Park takes place every year in Hyde Park. Gates open at 4 pm and the event starts at 5.30 pm. It will be presented by Sir Terry Wogan and will feature Neil Sedaka, Queen’s Brian May, the Abba tribute band, Bjorn Again as well as other acts. The event lasts for 5 hours and will include a firework display.
Tickets cost £30 each and if a group of 7 is bought at the same time, an 8th will be included free. Ring 0845 401 5040 or buy them from Door 12 of the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington.
The Pope’s visit - 16-19 September
It is nearly 30 years since the last pope visited this country. The present one, Pope Benedict XVI, will be visiting the UK from 16-19 September. He will be going to Scotland first and then Birmingham but will then also spend a couple of days in London.
On Friday 18 September, after celebrating mass at Westminster Cathedral, he will be going to Hyde Park for an open air vigil of prayer. Everyone is welcome to attend but be prepared for crowds of people to be there at the same time.
Horseman’s Sunday - 19 September
This procession to highlight the need to keep the stables in Hyde Park has been taking place every year since 1968.
It starts with a service at St John’s Church in Hyde Park Crescent at 10 am on Sunday 19 September and the procession will begin at midday, when the vicar will lead 100 horses and their riders through the park to celebrate horse riding in London. There will also be a presentation of rosettes and it promises to be a colourful event.
The Lord Major of Westminster and local MP s usually attend as well.

Hyde Park is served by 4 different tube stations - Lancaster Gate, Marble Arch, Hyde Park Corner and Knightsbridge. There are also a number of different bus routes in the area. The mainline stations of Victoria and Waterloo are nearby.
